“Pleasant. Have been at home during the day  Augusta took tea with us. attended singing school   John waited upon me home. he presented me a set of jewelry. Twenty years of my life has passed and the year that has passed has been one which will long be remembered. many happy hours have I enjoyed (?) and many unhappy ones but this night is long to be remembered.” – Hattie E.F. D.

Notes: John C. Chace, Hattie’s betrothed at the time of her 1866 diary, was a member of the GAR. The GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) “was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army (United States Army), Union Navy (U.S. Navy), Marines and the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service who served in the American Civil War for the Northern/Federal forces.”  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Army_of_the_Republic
